This neighborhood got its namesake from the University of Minnesota which is located within the neighborhood limits. The Mississippi River cuts the neighborhood into two parts, which makes it the only neighborhood in Minneapolis to take up space on both sides of the waterway.
On the east bank area is surrounded by the Mississippi River to the south and west, the railroad tracks near 8th Street, University Avenue, Oak Street, 15th Avenue and 11th Avenue. The west bank area is surrounded by 1st Street, 4th Street, 19th Avenue and the Mississippi River.
This area is predominantly home to students and faculty of the University of Minnesota.
