Waite Park is named in honor of Edward Foote Waite a judge of the District Court for Hennepin County for 30 years.

Waite Park is largely residential, but is also home to the Shoreham Yards train repair facility. The land is expected to be redeveloped in the future, however. A recreational space called Waite Park features a picnic areas, play courts, a wading pool and open fields.
